A good therapist listens without judging you, is extensively trained and experienced in looking for patterns of thought and feeling that you may not be aware of, and provides an objective professional relationship that is not possible with friends or family. A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– to teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself.
Counseling is also completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others knowing your private thoughts and feelings. Lastly, if your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion, and you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that once you are feeling better you could start avoiding that person so you aren’t reminded of this difficult time in your life.
I may not be, and that’s ok! All therapists are different, – it is important to find one who understands and validates you and who you feel gets your ‘vibe’, as well as one who has had experience treating the symptoms you’re experiencing. I offer a no-charge short (usually 15 minute) consultation session so that both of us can find out about each other to see if we are a good fit to work together.
If after the initial consultation session (or at any point after starting therapy) you don’t feel that we are a good fit together, I will be happy to give you a referral to another clinician who might be a better fit.
Special note: If you’ve had a negative experience in therapy before, please don’t assume that therapy is not for you! Each therapy experience is unique and highly dependent on the therapist you have.
Medication can be effective in helping to temporarily alleviate symptoms, but not to address the cause of the symptoms. Counseling is about personal growth so that the root of the symptoms is resolved.
Sometimes medication is helpful in conjunction with counseling. Our work together is designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing and expand on your strengths that can help you accomplish your personal goals.
Because each person has different issues and goals for counseling, treatment will be different for each individual. I will tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs.
Although it would be nice to know this up front, there is no way to know. Everyone’s circumstances are unique and the length of time it might take to enable you to accomplish your goals will depend on many different factors that are not predictable at the start of treatment.
I am so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions! You can get the most out of therapy by consistently attending sessions, participating actively, and doing your best between sessions to try and incorporate any new thinking or feeling interventions we are working on together.
